CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Juneteenth was celebrated for more than a century and a half before becoming a federal holiday in 2021.

Honoring a June 19 date in 1865 when Union generals announced the end of the Civil War and freedom from bondage in Texas, the holiday marks the official end of slavery in the United States.
