CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An unidentified Cleveland police sergeant is on administrative leave after the department says he shot a man who was in an altercation with another man at a nightclub.

The 34-year-old suspect shot a 28-year-old man and are both currently at MetroHealth following the shooting that happened about 2:30 a.m. Saturday at Belinda’s Nightclub on Madison Avenue near West 98th Street, Cleveland police said.

Officers and members of the Force Investigation Team responded to a call about a shooting involving a Cleveland police sergeant, and, upon their arrival, they found the 28-year-old man and the suspect with gunshot wounds, police said.

Investigators say there was an altercation inside the nightclub and both the 28-year-old man and the suspect got into a fight outside of the club, police said.

The man ran away from the suspect and the suspect ran after him and shot at him.

The sergeant was in his police cruiser doing paperwork outside of the club when he saw the suspect shoot at the man, police said.

The sergeant ordered the suspect to drop the gun and fired his gun at the suspect, striking him, police said. It’s unclear if the man complied and dropped the gun.

The incident remains under investigation.
