Man said he felt bad for stealing and returned to scene of crime, but was still charged: Solon police blotter

Solon police have issued a warrant for a Cleveland man who drove away from a traffic stop. The man was stopped because he was wanted on warrants and had an illegal window tint.

SOLON, Ohio --

Theft: Melbury Avenue

At 10:40 a.m. June 8, it was reported that a man loaded bags of soil into his Mercedes SUV at Solon Hardware, 6310 Melbury Ave., then left without paying.

An employee got the man’s license plate number, which police tracked to a Solon residence. AS officers at the home, they saw the man leave his house in the SUV and followed him back to the hardware store.

The man said he felt bad about leaving the store without paying. Police, nonetheless, cited the man, 25, for theft.

Obstructing official business: S.O.M. Center Road

At 10:25 a.m. June 5, an officer ran a registration check on a Jeep Cherokee with dark tinted windows as it entered a store’s parking lot. It was learned that the Jeep’s owner, a Cleveland man, 22, was wanted on warrants and had a suspended license.

The driver next headed north on S.O.M. Center Road, where the officer conducted a traffic stop. The driver got out of the vehicle and the officer told him to walk towards the police car. Instead, the man got back inside the Jeep. The officer walked to the Jeep and told the driver to get out, but he did not comply.

The officer attempted to break the Jeep’s driver’s side window in order to get the man out of the vehicle, but the suspect drove off.

Police, who knew the man’s identity, did not give chase. A new warrant has been issued for the man’s arrest on charges of obstructing official business, a fifth-degree felony, as well as resisting arrest and fleeing.

The man is also wanted for traffic offenses by the Ohio Highway Patrol and Shaker Heights police.

Improper handling of a firearm: US 422

At 3:20 p.m. June 6, an officer stopped a Dodge Charger on US 422 due to its illegally tinted windows. Upon approaching the car, the officer smelled the odor of marijuana.

The officer asked the driver, who had a suspended license, if he had a gun in the car. The driver said he did not.

Police searched the car and found marijuana and a loaded gun.

The driver, a Parma man, 21, was charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana, and having an illegal window tint.

Theft: Kruse Drive

At 7:50 p.m. June 8, an employee of Ulta Beauty, 6025 Kruse Drive, reported that two women loaded up baskets full of fragrances and left the store without paying. The women left in a black Kia sedan.

Police spotted the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Inside the vehicle were three women.

Officers recovered $8,600 worth of Ulta merchandise inside the Kia. All three women were arrested.

The driver, 24, of Akron, was charged with theft, a fourth-degree felony, along with receiving stolen property and driving under suspension. Another woman, 21, of Akron, was charged with theft, a fourth-degree felony, and receiving stolen property.

The third woman, 32, and also of Akron, was charged with complicity to theft, a fifth-degree felony.

Auto thefts: South Roundhead Drive

At 7:15 a.m. June 9, a man reported that his 2018 Honda Accord was stolen from his home’s driveway.

While at the scene, the man’s neighbor reported that her Mercedes C300 SUV was stolen from her home’s driveway. The woman said she left the key inside her vehicle.

Improper handling of a firearm: US 422

At 2:30 a.m. June 10, an officer stopped for speeding a Ford SUV that was traveling 83 miles per hour in the 60-MPH zone. The officer smelled alcohol on the driver’s person, and saw that she had red, bloodshot eyes.

The woman performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was arrested. Inside her car, police found marijuana products, a bottle of tequila and a loaded gun. A breath test revealed that the woman, 39, of Maple Heights, had a blood-alcohol content of .76, below the state minimum for drunk driving of .08. A urine sample was collected.

Police charged the woman with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a fifth-degree felony, as well as OVI, speeding, having an open container in a motor vehicle, and displaying plates that belong on another vehicle.

OVI: Various locations

Police arrested four people for OVI in recent days.

At 11:35 p.m. June 6, a Shaker Heights man, 48, was arrested on US 422 following a traffic stop for an unsafe lane change.

At 11:10 p.m. June 9, a Mayfield Heights man, 39, was charged with OVI after his vehicle struck a rock and became disabled on Aurora Road.

At 1 a.m. June 10, police arrested for OVI a Willoughby man, 35, following a traffic stop for speeding.

And, at 12:10 a.m. June 12, a Solon woman, 38, was charged with OVI and having a prohibited blood-alcohol content after being stopped for speeding on Aurora Road.
