MAYFIELD, Ohio -- The Mayfield Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) awarded four $1,000 scholarships June 1 to deserving graduating Mayfield High School seniors that will assist in furthering the students’ post-secondary education.

Those seniors include Alonna Hill, of Mayfield Heights; Jillian Gambino and Lauren Schmidt, of Mayfield Village; and Highland Heights resident Mohammed Zoraiz.

“We’re proud to participate in the Mayfield Honors Day Program once again, where each year we’re able to recognize four outstanding students,” said MACC President, Greg Costabile, in a release.

The Chamber, this year, received 51 student applications, up slightly from 2022.

“Each year, we put together a volunteer review committee made up of Chamber members and (Chamber) Board members,” explained Costabile. “These students’ applications are truly outstanding, and it gets harder and harder to select just four. Their stories, successes in and out of the classroom, and generosity in giving back to the community through volunteer efforts are compelling and moving.”

Costabile said that the scholarship program has grown to become a core function of the Chamber.

“The Chamber is obviously a business association, but it’s also a community service organization,” he said. “These scholarships are not only a way to give back to the four communities that comprise the Chamber -- and we hear that from the parents -- but they also help develop the next generation of leaders who are going to change the business climate in Northeast Ohio and beyond.”

The scholarships are funded by Chamber events held throughout the year, primarily its annual golf outing, which is entering its 30th year and is this year scheduled for Aug. 18 at StoneWater Golf Club in Highland Heights.
