SAN DIEGO -- Guardians’ right-hander Cal Quantrill could throw a bullpen session on this six-game western swing after being placed on the injured list with a sore right shoulder on June 2.

Second baseman Andres Gimenez, who left Sunday’s game against Houston with a sore left hamstring, was not in the lineup Tuesday against San Diego. Manager Terry Francona said that Gimenez should be back in the lineup on Wednesday.

“Cal is doing good,” said Francona. “He’s on this trip and we’re trying to figure out what day he’ll throw a bullpen (session) on. It should be fairly soon.”

Quantrill said he’s been dealing with soreness in the shoulder since late last year.

“At the end of last year, it wasn’t perfect, but I had the offseason to get back to where I wanted to be,” said Quantrill. “I thought we had it in a good spot for the first two or three starts this season, but the last month and a half just hasn’t been good.

“I wasn’t able to get the quality of work between starts that I think is necessary, and I suffered because of it.”

Quantrill (2-4, 5.61) lost his last two starts allowing 14 runs on 12 hits in 8 1/3 innings.

“It wasn’t all my shoulder,” said Quantrill. “I just wasn’t making good pitches. It just seemed like the right time. We’ve got to go solve this issue and make sure when I step out on the field, I’m giving the team a chance to win.

“It was the right time to do it. Maybe I wish I wouldn’t have waited quite so long. But it is what it is.”

Quantrill pitched for Canada in the World Baseball Classic during spring training. He did not think that played a part in his injury.

“No, like I said I had a good offseason,” said Quantrill. “I had it in a spot where we were OK with it. But as the season got going, I let it get a little too far. I take a lot of pride in taking the ball every fifth day. It’s something to learn from and I’m lucky that it wasn’t anything structural.”

Tyler Freeman started at second in place of Gimenez on Tuesday.

“Andres is doing pretty good,” said Francona. “James (Quinlan, trainer) said he’s about 95%, which is better than expected. So we’re going to let him run and take BP. He’ll play Wednesday, but we just felt it made more sense to give him another day.”
